Bathrooms are spacious and well equipped
with both shower and bath, plenty of luxurious thick towels.
Just metres away from the front door
of La Pietra Serena, stands the historic church of San Francesco,
construction started by its architect, Brother Elias, in
1245. Elias is one of the most important historical figures
of 13th century Cortona, a brilliant and enigmatic man who
was a friend and devoted follower of St Francis. He organized
the Franciscan order and subsequently was charged with building
the churches of San Francesco, in both Assisi and Cortona.
The commune of Cortona donated the land for this church,
an important ancient site of Etruscan/Roman baths at the
very heart of the town. Elias kept the structure of the
building simple, in line with the ideals of Francis, but
later Baroque additions to the interior have almost hidden
the original frescoes and his rose window has been replaced.
However, this church is an important link to St Francis
and his life in this area, more of which can be seen at
Le Celle Hermitage, just outside Cortona, on a spectacular
mountain site, It is speculated that Elias actually donated
the land to Francis on which Le Celle was built. The remains
of Elias lie to this day under the central section of the
main apse in the church of San Francesco.
